Certificate Course in Genetic counselling is conducted by the Division of Human Genetics at St.John’s Medical College. The goal of the course is to train practicing doctors of the Principles and Practice of Medical genetics and Genetic counselling and the candidates will also be provided training in Karyotyping and FISH techniques.

The main goals of the course include:
·Impart training that will enable the trainees to evaluate patients with genetic disease, order appropriate tests, interpret them for the patient, make a precise diagnosis and provide Genetic counselling.
·Provide skills in laboratory genetics to enable them to use appropriate genetic tests for diagnosis.

DURATION OF THE COURSE
Certificate Course in Genetic counselling is for duration of 3 months. Candidates must complete the course within 4 months of date of enrollment. The course starts from 1st of March every year.

ELIGIBILITY
Any medical graduate (MBBS) with or without a post graduate degree.
Preference will be given to graduates of St.John’s Medical College
Selection of the candidates will be on a first cum first basis. 2 candidates for each duration of the course will be selected.

TEACHING AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES
The teaching programme will include:
1. Case presentation & discussion- once a week (Each candidate can choose one case seen during the week)
2. Student Seminar/Journal Club –Twice a month- by 2 candidates
3. Clinical posting every day with faculty teaching. This includes pre – test counselling, documentation of case history, examination notes, investigations, management plan, Post - test counselling and case discussion.
Rotation of Clinical postings (various Depts) Lab postings and Microscopy for 2 candidates every month.
4. Faculty teaching (Theory) – once every week.
