Overview - Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy services at our institution was incepted in 1998 and since then Physiotherapy has undergone significant growth and development. Originally offered as part of the Orthopaedic Department, the services quickly expanded to become an integral part of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team in the newly formed Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department in 1999. Over time, the scope and awareness of Physiotherapy practices expanded throughout the hospital, with Physiotherapists actively contributing to specialized rehabilitation teams in various departments, including Specialty and Super Specialty departments.

In 2016, a significant milestone was reached when the Department of Physiotherapy achieved autonomy with the establishment of the Undergraduate course in Physiotherapy. This marked a turning point, as our dedicated department could now focus on continuously updating our services with evidence-based practices and extensive research.

Recognizing the importance of advanced education and research, we initiated a Postgraduate course in Physiotherapy in 2020. Affiliated with the esteemed Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, this program offers aspiring physiotherapists exceptional opportunities to further their knowledge and expertise in our diverse specialties.

Physiotherapy moved into specialization in areas such as Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Neuro Physiotherapy, Cardiorespiratory and Pulmonary Physiotherapy, Paediatric Physiotherapy, Community Physiotherapy, and Women's Health Physiotherapy, tailoring our therapeutic approaches to meet diverse needs.

In Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, our services encompass a wide range of treatments, including sports injury prevention and management, soft tissue injury management, rehabilitation for ACL, ankle, rotator cuff injuries, as well as post-surgical rehabilitation, joint mobilization techniques, and more.

Within Neuro Physiotherapy, we specialize in stroke rehabilitation, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, Bell's/Facial palsy rehabilitation, Parkinson's disease rehabilitation, and many other neurological conditions. Our comprehensive services also include vestibular rehabilitation, balance and gait rehabilitation, and cognitive rehabilitation, among others.

Cardiorespiratory and Pulmonary Physiotherapy form another vital aspect of our offerings, covering areas such as cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, physical fitness evaluation, ICU care, post-surgical and post-transplant rehabilitation, and energy conservation techniques.

Paediatric Physiotherapy is a cornerstone of our department, providing neuro-developmental therapy, early intervention, sensory integration, and extended therapy to special schools. We also offer critical care services in ICUs, multidisciplinary team programs, and orthotic and prosthetic advice and management.

In Community Physiotherapy, we extend our services beyond hospital walls, focusing on disability detection and intervention, ergonomic evaluation and education, geriatric reconditioning, fall risk assessment and intervention, and community outreach activities. Additionally, we conduct paediatric fitness assessments, provide institutional geriatric care, and conduct industrial visits to identify work-related musculoskeletal physiotherapy needs.

Our Women's Health Physiotherapy services cater to the unique needs of women, including antenatal and postnatal physiotherapy, urinary incontinence rehabilitation, childbirth education, physiotherapy for PCOS, lactation counselling, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and rehabilitation for sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

Physiotherapy has moved away from the traditional restoration into prevention as well. Physiotherapists have now come into first contact practice which has enabled many patients to have a better quality of life with early intervention and rehabilitation. Physiotherapy also has a great foot print in the field of Palliative care as well and the challenges continue to grow for the therapists to cater to the growing demands of health care.

At our institution, we take pride in our journey of growth, constantly striving to deliver high- quality, specialized care through evidence-based practices, ongoing research, and collaboration with various departments. Our dedicated team of physiotherapists is committed to improving the lives of our patients and making a positive impact on their overall well- being.
