Ethics education: An imperative for future generations

Pre-Conference Workshop on Ethics Education

A pre-conference workshop on key aspects of Ethics Education was conducted at the SJRI Conference Hall, St. John’s Medical College Hospital (SJMCH), Bangalore. The central theme focused on ethical and legal considerations in withholding or withdrawing life-support treatment in the Indian context. The session was led by Dr. Nandini Vallath, Head of the Department of Palliative Medicine, and Dr. Amarja Havaldar, Associate Professor in Critical Care, St. John’s Medical College. Through case-based discussions and expert insights, the workshop emphasized ethical frameworks, legal guidelines, and multidisciplinary decision-making in end-of-life care.

• KIDNEY SUPPORTIVE CARE PANEL DISCUSSION
Dr Nandini Vallath, HOD-Palliative Medicine was one of the panelists in Kidney Supportive Care at IAPCON 2025. Total No of attendees: 250



Ms. B.Aiswarya (Project Coordinator) presented a poster on Compassion Fatigue amongst the Nurses caring for patients with Cancer in a Tertiary Care Hospital, South India- A Qualitative Study.



Ms. Ann Maria Roy (Psycho-oncologist) presented on Paediatric Nephro-palliative care needs assessment using the integrated palliative outcome scale-renal: A Tertiary care experience.



“Ms. Nanda C Prem (MSW) presented a poster on Cross-sectional study on the Distress level of parents of children with serious illness using the Distress Thermometer-Parents. She clinched second prize in poster competition.



2. QICON- Quality Improvement Conference

This in-person workshop took place from October 18th to 20th, spanning three days and bringing together a diverse group of doctors and mentors from hospitals and organizations across the country. This intensive program was structured to maximize learning and collaboration among healthcare professionals dedicated to cancer care. Participants were divided into specialized groups, such as the Mentor Group and the EQUIP (Enhancing Quality Improvement Program) Group, each focusing on unique aspects of cancer treatment and patient care strategies. Mr. Jake Mickelsen took a session on Nuances leading a Quality improvement project. Also, sessions on QI- Operational excellence and Mentorship exercises took place. Dr. Nandini Vallath was the moderator for the entire sessions. All the In-person participants presented a ppt on fishbone with documented frequency under each contributor. The introduction to Mentoring and relevance was also discussed.
