Palliative Medicine - Training Programme


1. MBBS Class (Awareness and Training)
Dr. Nandini Vallath (Head of Department) and Dr. Anupama Girisan, Fellow in Palliative Medicine at SJMCH, conducted educational sessions for MBBS students on pain management. As part of their clinical exposure, the students were also taken to the wards for hands-on learning.

2. Training Program for Healthcare Professionals – St. John’s Geriatric Centre- 11/04/2025
A five-day training program was organized for 35 nurses and healthcare assistants at St. John’s Geriatric Centre (SJGC) to enhance their knowledge and skills in geriatric and palliative care. Ms. Kalaivani, Staff Nurse from the Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine (PPM), facilitated a session on the concepts of Hospice and Palliative Care. The session was moderated by Dr. Geraldine Monteiro, Tutor.
Additionally, Dr. Nandini Vallath, Head of the Department – PPM, delivered an insightful lecture on End-of-Life Care, focusing on compassionate approaches and best practices in caring for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

3. ToT in Geriatrics for Religious Nurses

It was held at St John’s Medical College Hospital and St John’s College of Nursing from 11th Nov to 30th Nov 2024.

This course has been designed based on a request from the Conference of Religious Women India to train a group of 37 Religious Sisters who are also professionally trained nurses, from across India to attend a TOT on Geriatric care so as to then go back to their respective areas and train 20-30 lay and religious non-medical persons in the care of the Elderly sisters in various congregations across India. The Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine staff took classes and role plays were also done by the team members.
