Genesis
The St. John’s Medical College Hospital was conceived as the cradle of clinical learning for all our graduates and postgraduates affiliated to our institutes across the health fields of medicine, nursing, paraclinical and allied health. This professional education can only occur by providing learning experiences that are academically sound, holistic, comprehensive and professionally delivered by our physicians who are also faculty. The hospital began functioning on the 8th December, 1975, and has steadily grown from a few hundred beds and units to over 40 full-fledged departments providing care and treatment services, both specialty and super specialty. By 2018 we would have added 600 beds to continue to be one of the largest health care facilities under one roof in Bengaluru with 2000 bed strength.

Purpose
The purpose of our hospital is three-fold with the patient paramount to our existence.

Clinical Service
It is primary to our existence and will always be driven by a patient centred approach by physicians who care. We are a tertiary-care, referral and teaching hospital that provides ethical and professional clinical care and treatment across all specialities ably supported by diagnostics services that includes laboratory-based, imaging and interventional facilities that remains affordable and accessible. With over 40 departments working as a team we can provide for most needs of our patients with in our own facility. Hospital facilities enable us to provide for all health-related emergencies including those required in mass casualty incidents and disaster situations. Outpatient consultations with cross references are feasible through our OPD schedules that extend from morning to late evenings on weekdays and those in need of diagnostic and therapeutic workups are enabled to be admitted through our inpatient facilities. Facilities for day-care are available that are restricted to targeted interventions and the care of chronic patients. Intensive care and Treatment units are spread across all ages of patients in need from newborn to adults, surgical to medical, and speciality to super specialities. Laboratory facilities are comprehensive and reasonably priced covering routine haematology, biochemistry including Immunology, genetics and molecular diagnostic requirements. Diagnostics available are imaging services under radiology and interventional diagnostics through the many super specialities existing on campus. Linkages to medico-social assistance and community outreach facilities exists for continuation of care and the pastoral department provides for spiritual needs of our patients. After-life care facilities include a Mortuary, embalming and autopsy services on campus. Hospital strives to cater to the needs of the public with special preference for the downtrodden and underprivileged byproviding excellent inpatient and outpatient medical facilities at a reasonable cost according to Christian values, irrespective of caste, creed and colour.

Annual patient statistics report of 2007 (January to December) shows a total of 5,03,274 outpatients registered, with a daily average of 1850. The total number of new outpatients registered during this period was 1,34,803. The total number of admissions made was 46,609, with a daily average of 148.

Academics
A teaching hospital has great advantages for our patients as our physician-teachers are constantly under scrutiny and observation by students who recognise the need for the practice of good medicine. Evidence- and protocol-based practices are the direction we are expected to take in our practice of the art and science of medicine, which in turn forces us to be role models for our students to learn. It is through demonstrating good medicine day in and day out that our students learn. In our hospital academics occur, but never at the expense of patient care which is the centre of our service.

Research
Medicine is a science that requires physicians to strive to improve care and treatment practices by constantly questioning and searching for the right answers for our patients. Evidence needs to be generated that gives us clarity to what is best for each of our patients to enable healing and progressing. In our hospital, research is conducted, but never at the expense of our patients’ rights that always has, is and will remain sacrosanct.

Location
Our main hospital is on Sarjapur Road, just off the Hosur Road junction, near the old Madivala Checkpost in the locality of Koramanagala, Bengaluru City (12°55'46.1"N 77°37'07.2"E). This is the state capital of the South Indian state of Karnataka. We are less than 30-150 km from our neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala well connected by air, trains and by road. The airport is 40.8 km away (approximately 1.5 hours away); and, the main Bengaluru City railway station and Majestic Bus terminal are 10.0 km (45-60 minutes away).

Key Services Provided in our Hospital
Specialities and Super Specialities:
All specialities and super speciality consultations exists in-house. Outpatient and Inpatient facilities are well-equipped and support the provision of comprehensive affordable and quality health care under one roof. State-of-Art and accredited laboratory services support the care of our patients. For targeted interventions and continuum of care Day Care Facilities are available. We are a major referral centre for all specialities and super specialities.

Emergency services:
Emergency services are competent and prompt with a standalone department that triages and manages all adult related emergencies inducing Intensive Care facilities till stabilisation and transfer can occur. A dedicated Paediatric and Neonatal emergency staffed by appropriate teams exist to enable specialised care where required. Both function 24-hour x 7-days. The strength of our multidisciplinary hospital is optimised by the ability to care for polytrauma. About 54,000 patients are attended to in the Emergency department in a year.

Critical care services:
Critical Care services include units for Adult Intensive Care (35 beds), Coronary Care (7 beds), Paediatric Intensive Care (13 beds) and Neonatal Intensive Care (35 beds) that cares for over 4,000 patients annually. In addition, many super specialities have dedicated ICUs for their patients directly under their responsibilities.

Childhood Disability (Unit of Hope):
This interdisciplinary unit has dedicated physicians and paramedical staff that cater to medical, surgical and allied needs of children with disability enabling the delivery of chronic care.

Oncology:
Cancer patients have much to benefit from comprehensive Oncology services (medical, surgical, paediatric) which includes transplants and radiotherapy facilities (like the Linear Accelerator).

Pain and Palliative Medicine:
Pain management and Palliative care facilities are available at St. Johns that supports the ongoing care of all our patients including when futility of care is an issue.

Interventional Services:
Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Pulmonary and Radiology have routine interventional facilities in-house.

Geriatric Services:
With rapidly changing demographics the provision of care for our geriatric population is optimised here at St. John’s with an outreach home based care facility.

Physical and Medical Rehabilitation Services:
Our multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation of our patients is essential for optimising recovery and putting outpatients back on their feet. The PMR department supports and enables our teams across Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy to work together towards this very end.

Chronic Care (Neurology, Endocrine, Cardiology, Medicine, Immunology):
The rise of non-communicable disease burdens due to life style behavioural changes has necessitated health care systems to realign to a chronic care model. Diseases like Diabetes, Stroke, Hypertension, COPD, HIV and Immune Disorders need multiple inputs to support the continuum of care vital in chronic diseases.

Transfusion Services
Transfusion services that [provide safe component products are essential in modern medicine.

Genetics and Molecular Diagnostics:
The future of medicine is moving rapidly towards genetics and molecular levels.
